PEDL will pursue a range of approaches that promise to produce credible research results that will be useful for policy-making, supporting research related to private enterprises of all sizes, initially focused on four themes: modelling market frictions in LICs using newly available data, understanding how constraints interact using micro-founded macro models, the dynamics of SMEs - informality and entrepreneurship and the role of export-oriented industries in driving growth. PEDL offers a mixture of substantial research grants and smaller “Exploratory” grants. The group of teachers and schools reached must be sufficiently diverse in terms of pupil population to eventually move all educational institutions (and the structures that guide them) towards ESD and to provide sufficient input and experience to keep Djapo's ESD framework connected to the various educational realities. To achieve this goal, we work through four different channels: (1) by providing relevant and high-quality educational materials and services, tailored to the different needs of teachers and schools and well-targeted communication and promotion; (2) by working with school environment actors, including cities and municipalities, Djapo also aims to reach schools that have not been reached before and to strengthen the functioning of ESD in schools; (3) by joining forces with other actors involved in ESD and education in function of influencing policy to structurally embed ESD in education policy; and (4) by focusing on learning and capitalizing - internally and with other experts / actors - to guarantee the quality and relevance of the ESD framework and to be able to develop and update materials and services to support its implementation.",BE,998,99820,BE-BCE_KBO-0408022778-PROGR2017-2021_SD1 BE-BCE_KBO-0432552989-PROG2017-2021_OS1_Noord,FONDS VOOR ONTWIKKELINGSSAMENWERKING - SOCIALISTISCHE SOLIDARITEIT VZW,BE-BCE_KBO-0432552989,BE-BCE_KBO-0432552989,2,17167,18992,"Comme le démontre le contexte mondial actuel, avoir des sociétés justes, durables, inclusives et solidaires qui mettent en oeuvre le travail décent et construisent des relations mondiales justes et équilibrées dans un contexte globalisé ne constitue pas un allant de soi. The unprecedented rate of biodiversity loss is one of the defining global challenges of our time. Reduced biodiversity will undermine the resilience of agricultural systems, threaten nutritional security, and put at risk the foundations of crop improvement. SDG 2.5 highlights the importance of maintaining the genetic diversity of crops and their wild relatives through soundly managed genebanks and ensuring access to diversity and equitable benefit sharing, in accordance with international lawi. Meanwhile, climate change is putting our increasingly homogeneous farming systems at risk of failure through extremes of abiotic stresses and severe occurrences of pests and diseases. The difficulty of predicting localized climate-related events and socioeconomic trends makes it critical to safeguard a broad range of genetic resources that can harbor valuable applications in many potential scenariosii.
The homogenization of landscapes and farming systems is matched by the simplification of diets, which is contributing to the additional burden of malnutrition. Meanwhile, international disagreement concerning the governance of genetic resources and genomic information is exacerbating nationalism regarding these resources. This is reflected in the reluctance of some countries to cooperate internationally in exchanging genetic resources and related information, with negative impacts on agricultural research and development. These tensions are also contributing to unprecedented scrutiny of CGIAR programs’ compliance with international laws.
To meet these challenges, there is a need to ensure that genetic resources are reliably conserved and made easily available. Better coordination is needed between organizations that are engaged in conserving plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) worldwide and the global system for conserving and making PGRFA availableiii must be strengthened. There are many new opportunities to manage, exchange and use genetic resources more effectively and to speed up plant breeding processes. There are needs for continuous technical improvement and innovation in seed quality management, imaging, cryopreservation, phytosanitary diagnostics as well as for characterizing germplasm and analyzing its potential value.
The Genebanks Initiative will a) conserve make available for use the in-trust collections of more than 20 staple crops in ten locations across five continents (See Annex I for crop collections). The collections are made freely available upon request to thousands of users worldwide every year under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Plant Treaty), accounting for a large amount of the germplasm being exchanged under the multilateral system of access and benefit-sharing; b) improve efficiencies and effectiveness by supporting long-term conservation activities at international standards, develop improved protocols and practices to improve efficiency and future-proof the genebanks and germplasm health units (GHUs); c) support CGIAR researchers and breeders as well as external users, by improving usefulness of managed genebank material for crop improvement and d) strengthen and support the global system through working together with strategic partners such as the Global Crop Diversity Trust (Crop Trust), Plant Treaty Secretariat and other international and national genebanks. The amount of water available to us in the world is finite, and as a result of increasing consumption, population growth and climate change, water supplies are coming under pressure. Direct water is the physical water that we use in Flanders to produce a product or service. Indirect water is the physical water that is used in another country to produce a product or service. Our consumption pattern determines the extent to which the population can develop water in developing countries through indirect water use. The program is working on a change in use and behavior in 5 municipalities (both on the administrative level and on the staff), and in the schools in these municipalities, thereby laying the link between our water use and the global water problem. Municipalities and schools will undertake a process of raising awareness, concrete actions for a reduction of direct and indirect use and an anchoring in municipal and school policy. Civil society organizations and (water) companies are involved in these processes, and the population is made aware of this problem. The program starts in 4 municipalities (Roeselare, Merelbeke, Bierbeek and Kortrijk), and will expand to a 5th municipality. Freshwater ecosystems such as lakes, rivers, wetlands and aquifers are uniquely important and yet particularly under threat. Under competition from many users for a multiple of different productive, municipal and economic uses, they bear the brunt of human activity through over extraction and pollution and will keenly feel the effects of climate change. Their protection, restoration and management is of utmost concern and importance to all, particularly considering that the majority of UN Member States, 151 out of 193 countries, share part or all of their water resources with another country. These concepts form the basis of the rationale behind Sustainable Development Goal (6), “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all,” the achievement of which would be instrumental for securing sustainable development. \n\nYet a lack of information, capacity, incentives, tools and involvement of stakeholders including gender aspects is hindering actors, from individual to government to corporate level, from taking steps to protect and restore freshwater ecosystems and achieve water-related SDG targets. Poor land and water management and growing competition, leading to the degradation of water-related ecosystems and the loss of their critical services, is a growing concern worldwide, with an urgent need for action. It is estimated that the world has already lost at least 60% of its natural water bodies since wide-scale development began in 1900, and that one-third to one-seventh of rivers in developing countries face severe pathogenic and organic pollution, including from a lack of safely managed wastewater and from run-off from land-based activities. Growing water stress in many parts of the world, as well as drought and desertification, are further serious concerns which the World Economic Forum among others has identified as some of the most serious threats facing our current and future societies and businesses. At the same time, since most countries share important transboundary water resources, information sharing and cooperation across borders is essential, requiring technical assistance and trust-building measures. There is growing concern that failure to do so can lead to tension and conflict, and further degradation of water bodies. Robust and abundant evidence also exists that freshwater resources are particularly vulnerable and have the potential to be strongly impacted by climate change, with wide-ranging consequences for human societies and ecosystems. Given future trends of population growth, development, and climate change, the integrated management of water resources across uses and users is therefore of utmost importance to ensure the sustainability of freshwater ecosystems and their services.",BE,140,14015,XM-DAC-41116-PROJECT-02052 XM-DAC-41116-PROJECT-02096,UN Environment Programme,XM-DAC-41116,XM-DAC-41116,2,18686,20498,"fossil fuel industry is responsible for one-third of anthropogenic methane emissions and is the sector with the highest potential for fast reductions that could slow the rate of global warming as efforts continue to decarbonize the energy system through cleaner forms of energy. We use FLEGT VPA processes, laws regulating illegal timber trade, business commitments, and climate initiatives (e.g. REDD+, NDCs and reforestation).",BE,312,31210,GB-COH-02863827-FGMC-20182021 GB-COH-02863827-FGMC-2021-2023,ClientEarth,GB-COH-02863827,GB-COH-02863827,2,18718,19357,"The causes and drivers of deforestation are rooted in the demand for and supply of timber and forest-risk commodities, such as soy, palm oil, beef and cocoa. This project will strengthen weak forest governance systems, legal frameworks and law enforcement by improving the legal awareness, capacity and engagement of stakeholders who depend on, and are in a position to safeguard the future of, forests. The change to which this programme proposes to contribute is the reduction of hunger, the advancement of the realization of the right to adequate food and nutrition (SDG 2) and a paradigm shift towards sustainable food systems (production, distribution, consumption) that allow access to better food for all while protecting the planet and preserving the well-being of future generations (SDG 2 and 12). According to our theory of change, this change is made possible through three spheres of action (or paths of change): political advocacy (SO1); citizen mobilization (SO2); and strengthening the movement for food sovereignty and the right to food (SO3). In the advocacy sphere, it is mainly political change that is sought to achieve the desired situation. In application of our human rights-based approach, our programme aims at both normative changes in accordance with international human rights law obligations, and better implementation of existing standards already consistent with the right to food (RtF). To this end, we aim to (R1) inform and raise awareness among relevant policy makers about their international obligations related to the RtF and their commitments in the fight against hunger and in favour of sustainable food systems (cf. SDG 2 and 12) ; (R2) Engage and support policy makers in key international policy processes and in the development of standards to strengthen the framework for the protection of the RtF, peasants' rights and private sector regulation ; (R3) Feed, through case studies of violations of the RtF, political debates on the need to strengthen the framework for the protection of the RtF and peasants' rights and the regulation of the private sector; (R4) Strengthen advocacy of relevant CSO platforms and networks for the food sovereignty and the RtF through better use of international instruments related to the RtF.",BE,998,99820,BE-BCE_KBO-0432622077-PROG2017-2021_Outcome_OS1_Plaidoyer BE-BCE_KBO-0432622077-PROG2017-2021_Outcome_OS2_Mobilisation,FIAN Belgium,BE-BCE_KBO-0432622077,BE-BCE_KBO-0432622077,2,17167,18992,"(1) Citoyens belges: (a) Base sociale de FIAN : Les militants des groupes locaux FIAN (GL), les membres FIAN (environ 200 membres cotisants) et les sympathisants (via mailing listes, réseaux sociaux, etc.)
